Another Consumer Privacy Issue in the GDPR Era: Session Replay Scripts

For companies that comply with the next General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), it is not just the name, the e-mail address or the cookie d & # 39; A user.

A recent article published by researchers at Princeton University highlights the practice of some websites of performing session replay scripts without notifying users:

These scripts record your keystrokes, mouse movements and scrolling behaviors, as well as the entire content of the pages you visit, and send them to third-party servers. Unlike conventional analysis services that provide aggregated statistics, these scripts are meant for recording and reading individual navigation sessions, as if someone was looking over your shoulder.

The study looked at seven of the most popular session proofing providers – Yandex, FullStory, Hotjar, UserReplay, Smartlook, Clicktale and SessionCam. Of the 50,000 most viewed sites on Alexa, 482 used session replay services.
